Dr. Russell Booker Delivers Keynote Address at Saint James School Historical Marker Unveiling Ceremony

IMG_3894.jpg

Dr. Booker returns to York County to join the Hickory Grove Community Preservation (HGCP) to celebrate the unveiling of the Saint James School historical marker. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Historical Marker Program distinguished the Saint James site for its historical significance in the education of black children grades one to eight from 1931-1957. The Saint James School was built in 1929-1930 at a cost of $3,000 by local farmers and workers. It sits on a 4-acre lot and followed a two-teacher design plan commonly used for smaller Rosenwald Schools. It was one of 20 Rosenwald Schools in York County and served local families until 1957, finally closing as part of the consolidation of the York County School system. The building later served as Saint Paul Baptist Church, which operated until the 1990s. It is one of three Rosenwald School buildings still standing in York county.
